Default Northern Ohio - Low Number of Swarm Calls

It's May 22nd, and I have not received a single swarm call this year. For the past several years I've had so many calls at this point in the month of May that I've had to refer some of them to other local beekeepers. Not one call yet. I'm curious if there are any other beekeepers in northern Ohio who may be experiencing a similar situation.

My overwintered colonies built up a little later than usual this spring, and none of them have started any swarm cells. But I've been pretty attentive to keeping the brood nest open and overhead space open for expansion. Just wondering if we are running that far behind schedule this year in swarming or if there is something else going on. I've never seen it this quiet in the 2nd half of May.

Hi Mike, I'm in southwest oh. I believe it is about 3 to 4 weeks behind. I normally have had several by now. My first call was last week. I've had 3 this week.

I have a question. Will there be a lower number of swarm calls this year or will the calls just be later? If the mid-west's build up is compressed, and then we get into the main flow is it possible that the bees will just not swarm as much?

That's a very good question Adrian. I guess we'll have the answer in a few weeks.

Birdman, how many were you able to hive?

Ken, maybe we'll be a week or so behind you up here.

We are behind in swarming this year simply because the last couple years we had a very early spring, this year we had a late spring comparatively speaking. My overwintered hives came through pretty weak to start with so they have not yet reached a dense enough population of bees to kick swarming into gear, but I'm starting to think that this may just be a low swarming year in general. I got 2 swarms in the hive and 4 cut out to do. 4 in buildings that I couldn't get to, 3 that was 25-30 ft up and 1 that is 30ft up in the gable of an office, which is 2 hives the are in both gables. Eight of them are with in a 10 block area.

First heard of swarms a week or two ago -- by this time last year we were done with swarms.

Missed two -- one at a co-worker's friend's house that was gone by the time she got home from work and a small one at work that got away.

Hopefully I'll get a couple this year, I want more bees and splitting isn't working for me right now. I also think I lost a swarm from both hives, which is more than a little annoying!

2 calls so far this year, had a dozen last year. Likewise I checked hives last weekend and few swarm cells. Did find one with about 15 capped cells that I am trying to get into nucs today. Lots of calls from people with bees in walls from all the swarms that we missed last year. No one in our area really wants to mess with cutouts though. Most hives were slow building up and are just getting crowded now.

    Swarms are coming, don't worry.

4 weeks later than last year here in Kansas City. Have caught 10 in the last week and a half.

Report from our bee club is that a lot of our managed hives died over this winter so I wasn't expecting a swarm season like 2012.
