    Question Bees at Hummingbird Feeder

Member of the public emailed me and asked for advice. For the first time in many years, she has 20 to 30 bees daily at her hummingbird feeders (which she keeps full year round). She is allergic to bees. Is there anything she can do to keep the bees away from the hummngbird feeders? The source of the bees is unknown.

Not knowing more about the feeders themselves, I am going to guess that they are leaking. This attracts ants, so I imagine it could attract bees. If that is the case, replacing them so that a 2" beak is required to get to the nectar should do the trick.

Yep, she needs new feeders. Bees should not be able to get to the food inside a hummingbird feeder. If they leak at all the bees will use them.

Here is an earlier thread regarding hummingbird feeders:

Note this thread has a link to a feeder that is designed to keep bees out of the feeder.

I have one of the hummzinger feeders and highly recommend it. Easy to clean and fill and no ants, bees or yellowjackets get to it.
