    Default Very Scattered Brood

Monday we did a very indepth inspection of a recently purchased colony. There was plenty of bee's, we did not see a queen, the brood was very scattered, like 1 unhatched in 25. I need clues for what is wrong!

There is nothing obvious wrong, they are on wax, the wax looks good.

Is it possible they have recently swarmed and the new queen has not started laying yet?

Are you talking about an existing colony, or do you mean a brand-new package?

I don't know that 4% is all that bad - might not be all that good as a far as it goes either. Some queens just don't lay awesome patterns. Also there might be pollen or honey in a few cells. And brood patterns change a bit through the season.

Of course there could be something wrong too - do the cappings look good, or are some of them perforated. You might have high mite loads. Is the open brood nice and white or off colored and yellowish? You could have European Foul Brood.

You should also realize that when you see those pictures of perfect brood on the Internet - people took those pictures because it was particularly nice.

This colony is at least 2 + year old, they seem healthy, there is no smell. The unhatched brood that is left looks normal other than being scattered. We should have dug some of this unhatched brood out to see if it looked normal.

Any other questions or suggestions. The new owner did add a queen cell above an excluder to keep it away from a queen we did not see.
