    Default Is this normal?

It's not often but every once in a while I see a few bees flying out of the hive with what looks like a flake of wax in their mouth.
Is this wax? Is this normal? What are they doing? And why?

    Thanks!

On a guess, I'll say that it's pretty likely that it *is* wax. When bees are "of the right age" to produce wax, they will sometimes produce wax that, for whatever reason, they can't use for comb building at that time. If you have a solid bottom on your hive, you'll see flakes of "dropped" wax on it fairly regularly (well, at least I do in mine). As for the bees leaving the hive with such flakes in their mouths, I'm guessing those are your "housekeeping bees" simply cleaning whatever "junk" they find out of the hive box for ya

Yes, it is normal for them to clean out their house this way. I've seen one did this today on a
hive inspection. Sometimes these are the wax capping from the newly emerged bees.

Ok, golden! I'll ask them to be more frugal with their wax thank you!
