    Default What is this for?

I have a nuc, 4 frame, it has screen on the sides below the brood area. The screen area is about 4 inches down to the bottom of the nuc and only on the sides not the end.

Just wonder what it was for, the owner died several years back and no one know what it is.

I don't know for sure, but I saw a thing on youtube where a guy used a similar setup as a queen cell starter, I don't think his had an exit tho. He would put a frame of honey, a frame of pollen, 2 frame of empty comb, a wet sponge for water, and his frame of grafted queen cells into the starter with a LOT of nurse bees and leave it for about 24 hours before putting the queen cells in a cell finisher and the nurse bees back in their hive. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sq5fFhWo-mY

Sounds like a Swarm Box used in queen rearing. The screen is for ventilation and wet sponges are usually placed in the bottom for moisture. Grafted larvae are placed in this box as a cell building starter.
