Default 2nd year beekeeper in TN

    Hi all,

I am entering my 2nd year of beekeeping.

Last year, my single hive made it well into the fall and seemed set to over-winter. Then, in spite of an electric fence, a bear got it!

This year, after attending a seminar on top bar hives I built 2 top bar hives and I have installed Russian packages in them. Already have a problem ... but that is for another post in another area...

Thanks Greg... I just read your blog entry on the swarm trap... something maybe I will try next year.

Welcome to the site! Sorry to hear about the bear attack. I have them too. I have had my bees 5 weeks today. So far so good. What kind of fence did you have? This is mine. Hope it works.

    Wow! You built a fortress!

Last year I had a battery operated mesh electric fence that was supposedly designed to keep grisly bears away from food. Fail.

This year, I went to a local metal salvage yard and bought steel cages, built a pergola around the steel cages, put the hives inside the steel cages. Plus, I've extended my (dog) fencing to include the hives. So, now the hives are also protected from critters by a Great Pyrennes and a little mutt.

I need to take a few pictures of my "bee cages" and post.
