I'm sure everyone does not do this. I use cypress components coated (outside) with 100% Tung oil. I like the natural look and the bees seem to approve too. How long they last is yet to be seen.
I was meaning does everyone do this sort of preservative method for coating your boxes
It says in this book that the copper based preservative is toxic to bee’s so I was wondering what other people use?
Do people still use a primer then paint over it all?
Thank you for your time
Ralph
I use untreated pine, and paint only the outside with a good exterior latex enamel. I have accidentally received copper napthelene (?) treated components, and I won't use them in my hives. They smell terrible, even after offgassing for a few weeks. I have been assured that the chemical won't harm the bees or get into the honey, but it the same time by garage still smelled like CN for weeks after I threw away the components...
I too use a latex primer and paint; on the outside only. The bees will coat the inside with propolis and wax. I am still using some boxes that are over thirty years old. If you keep up on the maintance your equipment will last a long time.
