Default A sad day - Russell Apiaries closing

I just noted that Russells Apiary is closing. I very much apreciated Roberts input over the years and often wished I could access some of the queens they where offering. I'm to far away to know the background but on a beekeeping level this is a sad loss.
    This is from the website:
Sadly, after restructuring the company in order to develop the state operator program, and investing so much into that program on top of major health issues, we were forced to close and enter bankruptcy upon the exiting of many of the operators due to some false allegations made on another website. All creditors have been listed in the bankruptcy and you should receive a notice of this in the mail. We took a large risk in the hopes that we could benefit the industry in great ways by creating a future of specifically localized acclimated genetics, and with the fall of that program and failing health, we have lost too much to be able to survive the damages.

There are still several excellent producers with our stocks, and we will continue to refer incoming requests to them. With the closing of the company, all production, retail, and wholesale activities were halted. This website will instead be used as an educational tool for Robert Russell to personally reach the many supporters that seek his advice. These writings will of course include a multitude of beekeeping and gardening topics, such as management techniques, selection methods, equipment construction, pest and disease control, and evolutionary theory, as well as an interesting and very personal look at the connections between our diets and the fight against cancer.

What false allegations are being referred too? I thought the thread was pretty solid on being getting ripped off.

If you do bad business, you won't be in business very long. I wanted some of his queens too but after a quick search about his queens Russel's business practices became pretty apparent after reading tens upon tens of people complaining about no correspondence about their orders, didn't receive an order, can't get their money back, etc. If a few people don't like your business, whatever, but when there's a chorus of people that are complaining about your business practices something is definitely wrong. I wish him/his own the best regarding the health issues.

Russell Apiaries is a fine example of:

Take care of business, or business will take care of you.

Max; are you one of Robert Russell alter egos? - You must be.
I just cannot believe there are still supporters to his criminal behavior and unmoral blind ambition that drove a lot of people into misbelieve and apprehension / mistrust to good and honorable beekeeping suppliers. I do not care how much knowledge the “Doc” may have, or how many wonderful types of wonder bee stocks he can offer, and if he is not who he says he is, and hides behind mirrors to take money he has not earned; he is a thief.

I am just so glad that I got my money back before he folded his little tent. He was a con man who is best out of business. he only started the refund business after spending some days in jail. I am sure that repayments were a stipulation of his getting sprung. I just hope that my refund money didn't come from mortgaging his mother or some other enablers house! I don't feel sorry for him. It is a shame he went bad, as it is a shame when anyone fails to follow their better angels. Michabee, I hope you got your money too!

Vance, I got my money but, I do feel sorry for those who did not.
There is nothing sad about a "ConMans" game being over.

I came in late to beekeeping. But glad I don't have to deal with these headaches like others have. I saw his network shut down one by one, state by state within weeks while I was searching for a queen bee to buy. I wonder if he is credible enough to learn from his educational tool. I sure will stay away to learn more about moral and ethical teachings.

I can say that I absolutely HAVE seen him give very good advice to ppl on several occasions. So, as an educational tool I expect that to be very useful.

On the business aspect of things, I'm owed a few hundred $$ that I'm absolutely certain I'll never see again, as are plenty of others here. That said, I do here see the possibility (note I didn't say probability...I'm not looking to argue anyone on odds, "facts" or opinions) that everything they did as a business was *intended* to be legitimate, and simply a very, erm, effective "object lesson" of sorts, as to why a wholesale supplier should NOT open their doors to sell to the public! Obviously, either way, con or failure, none of us are getting the bees we ordered, or our money back though; so I'll leave off there for the sake of avoiding being any more controversial.

In my opinion, a person who lies to peoples faces and uses an alias to steal from people has no knowledge worth listening to. (Especially since he failed at being a con man as well.)

I am glad I was able to get my money back to use with reputable suppliers. "Once burned twice shy."

"are you one of Robert Russell alter egos? - You must be. " - MichaBees.
Not sure where you are basing your assumption on?
I have never meet Robert but I have read many of his posts over the years. I have been in bees for over 35 years and I found that I could always learn something new from him. He seemed knowledgable on many issues related to many other aspects of beekeeping with a deep understanding of Varroa and SHB issues.
I'm based in Australia and obviously have not been buying queens from him and can't comment about any of the business practices people complain about.
Fact is that Roberts posts attracted a lot of readers. I think it does show that I was not the only appreciative reader.

This stuff simply amazes me. I suppose this is why and how it all "works" for these types.

Just goes to prove that like P. T. Barnum said, there's one born every minute.

Rob provided a lot of very good information on this forum. I know I'm not the only skeptic that was impressed by some of his posts here...there had to be some actual understanding of the topics.

Unfortunately, the lies and made up information appears to have been mixed in. In talks that I've given, I've cited some "unpublished" work that Rob claimed to have done (wrt emergency queens). The experiment that he claimed to have done would have been exemplary...had it actually been done. I was sucked in....he claimed to be doing what I think I would do (or at least like to do) with the resources he claimed to have.
I'm thankful that he turned down our invite to speak at our conference last year.

i have no specific knowlidge of this situation and i am makeing no accusations. but a lot of times when a small bussiness goes downhill into a crazy fall there is more to it. often substance abuse, drugs, alcohol, out of control gambleing or mental illness is involved. instead of being mad perhaps we should have a learning experience. also let us all not try to get ourselves in this situation. if things start to go downhill seek help fast. all this bad stuff is not an excuse.

You can be a very knowledgeable expert in a field and a very poor businessman. The 2 are not the same. A good scientist is generally poor with people skills and money management otherwise they would be rich and relaxing not sweating and working long hours!
