    Default Am I missing anything?

I'm still planning on getting bees next year, so I figure I have all of this year to get ready. I've signed up for some classes, read a few books, and figured out where I'm going to put them. Now I'm looking at what equipment I'll need. What I think I'm going to need after looking at kits is:
    2 brood boxes
    2 medium supers
    20 deep frames
    20 medium frames
    1 bottom board
    1 queen excluder
    1 inner cover
    1 telescoping cover
    nails
    small cell foundation
    1 entrance feeder
    1 entrance reducer
    1 hive tool
    smoker
    veil and jacket
    gloves

What I'm still not sure about is what kind of frames to get to use with my foundation. Any help here? And I'm planning on getting it unassembled to help with cost, and I'll have time to put it together until next spring.

If you want to use small cell foundation you could just use Mann Lake's PF frames. Some people would suggest using all medium equipment. I'm one of those who have all 8-frame medium boxes.

Mann Lake's economy jackets are very decent. I wouldn't like using a veil.

Go with a hive top feeder or just feed syrup from containers in an empty box over the inner cover.

You have plenty of time to agonize over all of the details....

I went with teh same exact puchase with Mann Lake when I started. In retrospect, I wish I had gone with the 8 frame set up. I think the all medium sounds good, but I don't mind the 8 frame deeps. My first hive has your above description set up. But everything else I have built and go with the 8 frame dimensions.

I would Agree with BeeCurious about the hive top feeder. I only use the boardman entrance feeder for open feeding, which works.

I wouldn't start with small cell, being that the majority of bees available are not small cell bees. Unless you find a reputable deeler of small cell It may be best to start with the PF or go with starter strips. I purchased small cell and cut it into 2 inch starter strips to begin the process of regression. What ends up happening is the bees draw what ever size they want.

Good Luck, The sooner you get started, the sooner you will start learning.

Thanks for you help. If I use starter strips, what kind of frames would I use? Would I need a wedge top or a groove top?

The advantage of using the PF frames is that poorly drawn comb can be scraped off and the frame returned directly to the hive.

Otherwise, grooved top and bottom bars are what I use. A wax tube fastener is handy for attaching starter strips if you go that route.

I use the wedge top bottom groove and staple with a hand stapler two staples that compress a 2 inch length of small cell into place. I ordered 40 sheets of deep foundation and get 4 starter strips out of it. Good deal to me.

Since you want to start out small cell, maybe consider getting a small cell package from the start. Check out Wolf Creek Apiaries from Tennessee, as they do sell small cell bees and have a lot of helpful info on their site.

You also have the option for foundationless, or PF120s (or PF100s if you insist on the deeps)

    There are many better options.

    Get a large one.

    >veil and jacket

Get one with a zip on veil and elastic sleeves.

    >gloves

if you have the jacket with the elastic, you can buy some nice thin leather work gloves (usually called "doeskin" or "buckskin") and tuck them into the sleeves.
