Default when do I switch my entrance reducer to the bigger size?

My hive is about 3 weeks old, it's a 10 frame hive that came from a 5 frame nuc. When do I switch my entrance reducer from the smallest entrance to the largest? I worry about robbing, but at times it seems like a very high traffic area. It looks like an interstate backup going into the hive. This is not all the time, but when they are doing orientating flights, or like today when a thunderstorm was coming in. The girls almost got caught out in the storm. It was fun to watch all the foragers coming back to the hive just before the rains came in.

    Thanks,
    Joyce

I judge it by traffic. If it looks like there is congestion during flying times it is an indicator you can open it up, and conversely if there were not enough bees to guard it - close it down.

Thank you. My husband suggested I open it up, I'm just afraid of robbing, but I guess the traffic flow warrants it.

Probably don't need one in Florida.

I'm in GA and the only time I ever use one is when a hive is in distress.
If the colony is in good shape in Florida...take it out entirely is my opinion.

Thank you. I guess I will take it off entirely and keep an eye out for any trouble. If there is, i'll just put it back.

if there are enough gatherers to be congested there are probably enough bees to defend the hive..

Took off the entrance reducer completely. At first they didn't know what to do with all the space. Now they are just coming and going from wherever they want. Thanks for the suggestion.

I keep checking for robbing or any other issues. None that I see so far, although they are only using the left side if the front entrance to come and go. Weird, but that's what the girls like I guess.
