Default Capped Drones in Western Massachusetts

This is an FYI for New England beeks.

Upon isnpecting 20 hives today, all strong colonies have at least 1 frame of capped drones. The weaker colonies do not have any drones. My strongest colonies have 3-5 deeps frames of capped worker brood. There is nectar coming in too.

I write this beacuse usually 30 days after capped drones swarm season will be here. I am quite surprised to see these capped drones. The weather has been cold, cloudy, and windy for weeks. Swarm traps will be going up this week.

I'm not surprised. I think the bees do it by the length of the day and we base a lot on weather. It's a late spring here but the bees dont have thermometers!

Thanks for the info, will mark this down.

Do you rotate the hive bodies?
    Was the cluster broken?

    Thanks

I do rotate but not yet. I like to see more brood and pollen before I rotate. The cluster was loose on the brood. They were gathering honey from the wall frames. I moved full honey frames next to the cluster.
