    Default Year round hive insulation?

Would there be a down side to leaving extra insulation on hives year round? Assuming ability to vent in summer.

Keep in mind that your hives need ventilation in winter too. Regardless of how much insulation you have humid air needs to be vented to avoid/reduce condensation in the hive.

Some beekeepers use hives build entirely out of foam:

Obviously that "insulation" is in use year round.
