Default Just added 3 more hives fom BeeWeaver packages.

Great day, and it went well. Also got to meet Laura Weaver at their Navasota, TX facility. I saw hundreds of packages, and dozens of NUCs ready for customer pick up. Their hybrids are now primarily Buckfest and after installing 4 packages (one TBH install for a friend) I only got stung once on my thumb. I'm looking forward to my Wed. inspectins to see how they are doing (my 3 installs were all in med. boxes - 10 frame). I am really looking forward to the next year and my first harvests...

I'm picking up two B Weaver packages this Saturday. I love their bees, and Laura Weaver is the best.

Did they change their hybrid "mix"?

Reading through this forum it appears many find their Bees to be a bit on the HOT side but I think this was talked about a few years back (09 ish). Curious how their personality is 3 or so years later?

I remember that discussion from several months ago, too; it comes up rather often.

My B Weavers aren't hot. This makes only one year with them, after a few swarms. Can't comment on 3 years.

Also, you probably know this, but B Weavers are treatment-free. I've never treated mine.

When I picked up my 3 packages of bees Sat., 6 Apr. '13, I got the opportunity to talk to and meet Laura Weaver. Yes they updated their bee definition this year, it used to say they were Italian hybrids, the new one is an update that more accurately reflects their genetics. Below is a cut and paste from their Queen page. My bees from last year still are not "hot" and I am very pleased with them. The closest I come to treatment is Honey Bee Healthy & Amino Bee Booster during install and winter feeding. Two of my hives had their second super added two weeks ago, so I am very pleased with their early preparation (not a lot of honey yet, but good comb building).

"BeeWeaver Queens are a hybrid of our very best All Star and Buckfast and BeeSMaRt colonies. After selecting for mite resistance, high honey production and healthy populations in all our queen lines for over a decade we found our breeds became similar. Our choice to combine the breeds will bring you the best all around bees possible and better customer service. This decision may have been an obvious one to make, but it was not an easy one. We hope as the beekeeping world evolves you will find that our own evolution is the best path to overcome today’s challenges in the world of bees."

There's a video from their site in which Daniel Weaver is addressing the Central Texas Beekeepers' Association in January of 2010. He said their bees were Mellifera, Ligustica, Caucasica and Scutellata (German, Italian, Near East and African). I'm going to ask Laura when I see her Saturday if they have altered that.

Oh, I hear you on the comb-building. The girls are goin' to town!!!

Yes, I had to do an apology to Lauri in WA on this same item, and I posted the links to both of the videos.

I did talk to Laura about her Bee's. SHe was very helpful. I watched their videos last night, also a good watch. Not sure what traits AHB have to offer that are good? However with requeening and all to get the HOT out that would also water down any good traits as well (Correct?) So I'm not sure what if any good comes from AHB here?

Besides some HOT bees in the past from AHB it seems that is the only complaint (for the most part) and it appears the HOT trait has been watered down? Anyone purchase 2012/13 bees that have HOT issues?

    Hi, Trance:

Good AHB traits??? Less susceptible to insecticides, apparently.
    Resistant to varroa mite. Hygienic.
    And they're still good honey-producers.

Didn't know, thanks but isn't that watered down with requeening that they do to try and get "Nice bees"? But I guess I was just asking for good trait in general...

How many times does someone have to requeen to get the AHB trait out? I guess it will never bee out but?

Just finished doing my 4 day check on queen release, all is good. Plus in each hive (med. 10 frame super brood chamber) they have already done a lot of comb building on 4 frames. my next check will be in 10 days and I expect to need adding another box. At the rate they are going it would not surprise me to have all 3 med. supers for the brood chamber will be progressing nicely. Very pleased and they seem to be a little better than last years queens/hives. lthough these are my first packages, last year was a NUC that grew into 2 deeps in 2 months. I did a split pulling 6 frames to start 2 hives with mated queens and all 3 were full in 2 deeps in 2 more months.

I just installed a B Weaver nuc on the 6th and found those bees were very docile. They were not at all aggressive.

I helped a neighbor with his bees a few weeks ago and those were definitely hot. They were bouncing off my veil so much, they looked like popcorn!

At 135 each plus shipping beeweaver prices for packages are rather expensive--is the price justified for those out there who have bought from them before? On face I cant see how but I would like those who have gotten them to chime in.
