Default How do you know when to stop feeding sugar water?

I've been feeding sugar water/ honeybee healthy to my bees since January and they are doing very well, even though I lost 2 of 6 hives this winter. I just wanted to know when we stop feeding them sugar water and pollen patties? I/ve heard something at one of our bee meetings about how if you feed them sugar water too long then you only get it put back in the hive instead of honey. I am confused and want to make sure since things are really starting to bloom here in the foothills of NC.

if you run a single deep 2 or 3 frames of capped honey/syrup is enough to carry them through a rainy spell
if you have a double deep 4 or 5 will do
after that threshold cut them off if you dont want syrup in the super
if you are trying to draw comb in a super feed till the box is about 7 of 10 frames drawn
this is NOT set in stone but a general rule of thumb

You are exactly correct. Unless you are trying to sell HFCS honey. Kind of like the Chinese do.

If they have capped stores and there are things blooming, I would not feed them...

    Michael,

I have been struggling with this for the last couple of days. Here in GA, things are blooming and the bees are expanding and doing nicely. I have been feeding for a long time now. Today, I decided that since things are blooming, they don't need any more syrup. I stopped feeding them. They really don't have capped stores but they have syrup in cells. In some places, they have syrup in cells where brood should be.

So, was this the right thing to do?

    That's what I would do.
