Default USDA Bee Lab Turn Around

I sent a sample of bees to the USDA ARS lab and they should have arrived January 28th but I haven't heard anything yet. How long does it usually take before you hear back from them? I sent an email to the two contacts listed on their website but received nothing back.

A week to ten days, longer if they are backed up.

Could be busy this time of the year.

Sounds about right. We got results back in something like ten days early in January.

Usually 7-14 days, but I've had instances when it took almost 4 weeks to get the results back. That was in March/April and I sent in 14 samples.

A few years ago I was visiting family in the DC area and called the Bee Lab to see if I could make an appointment to tour the facility. They worked it out with me and one afternoon I took a drive up to the Bee Lab & Research Center in Beltsville, MD. They were very gracious and glad that someone was interested in their work, and I received an in depth tour of the facility.

I was fully impressed with the facility and the research they were working on. One thing that was actually a bit of a shock to me was the actual Bee Lab itself, where all of the mailed in samples are tested. In my mind I was expecting to find a large laboratory with several technicians all working on processing the samples. However, I learned that for the most part, the gentleman giving me the tour was doing the majority of the sample testing himself in a small lab no larger than a bedroom.

He took the time to show me the methods used to test the samples for different disease and pests. I have no idea how he keeps up with the workload, to me it appeared to be a feat of extreme organization and efficiency.

Anyway, my point is that turn around times can vary depending upon the volume of samples being received during a certain time period. I'm impressed, and thankful for the service they provide. I don't know how they do it. Thought I would pass that along.
