Default Looking for monthly/seasonal bee club topics

I'm tasked with organizing our clubs monthly topics.
Interest was expressed by the group in having speakers talk about what is happening at that time of year.
Several topics could be included for each meeting.

I'd like to have a speaker give a talk one month ahead of when you would actually be doing something.
Maybe talk about Spring splits/swarm prevention and installing package bees into a hive for March.

    Any help is appreciated.
    thanks

    Hi Allen,

We have a club survey we plan to reissue a couple of times a year to track the interests of members. We are also going to focus on swarms this spring (not strictly prevention in this case), so that topic is not on the current survey. Anyway, here is a list that you may find useful to ponder. Note that some topics can be re-categorized or may sound redundant, and please share any topics you see not included.

    Mechanical Management:
Solid and screen bottom boards/ top entrances
    Powdered sugar roll
    Top bar & foundationless
    Housel positioning
Use and effects of smoke and fumigants
    Equipment cleaning and storage
    Managing aggressive behavior
    Breeding selection, preventative measures

    Community Outreach
    Community education programs
    Habitat preservation - sanctuary
    Diverse forage & pollinators
Breeding initiative - regression / local / survivor

    Feeding & Medicating Methods
    Bee friendly plants
    Harvesting, cleaning and storing pollen
Pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, insecticides, dsRNA / RNAi
    Nutraceuticals, supplements, stimulants

    Beekeeping Production
    International beekeeping techniques
Harvesting and using products of the hive
    Natural marketing

    Advanced Techniques
Breeding for small cell / regression
    Brood interruption
    Swarm capture
    Other

    Hi Scott, welcome to Beesource!
    Thanks for that great list.
I also like the idea of a club survey.

Some of my topics could be:

    Nucs: why have them
    Queen rearing and management
    Products of the hive
    Sales/Marketing
    Winter Prep
    Summer Dearth
    Splits
    Swarms: prevention and baiting/catching swarms
    Pest management
Feeding: when, with what, how long and for what reasons

Was thinking of having printed materials to handout and videos to watch.

Do you have a University close by? A couple times a year we have students and sometimes Dr. Ellis from University of Fl come and speak at our clubs meeting. The last one was on Drone Congregation Areas and was very interesting. I would really be interested in the out come of the study.

We meet at the Berks County Ag Center where the Penn State Extension offices are located.
I'll have to look into that type of speaker.
Am also going to try to set up a field trip to a local queen breeder.

New members are always interested in what the bees are utilizing at the time. It would be neat to have someone bring in samples of what the bees are working each month.

A list of our club programs the past few years
    http://pwrbeekeepers.com/about-2/history/

You can see our emphasis on nucs and queen rearing, and repeated programs on Spring and Fall management.
