In my area, I think that it is a good idea to reduce the entrance in the winter to keep out cold drafts. I'm not sure a robber screen would do that very well.

I have all my entrances reduced, and a piece of windowscreen that causes bees to have to walk across the landing board or screen from the side to get to the entrance on all my hives. BUT I am in Texas. Robbing is a frequent event especially when there isn't a flow on.
Bees in winter - new phenomenon, but I've got them... So far so good.
I tried it, the bees used dead bees to help plug up the large opening at the bottom when it got really cold. I took off the robber screen when I saw this because it can't be good to have tons of dead bees used as insulation on the front of your hive. Glad I caught it when I did and I won't try this robber screen idea again.
