Mineral spirits will work much better than alcohol.

Melt the wax and mix in vegetable oil, linseed works well as it will polymerize and form a hard semidurable surface. Olive oil works if you're after penetration. The more oil you add the softer/more liquid the result.
When I use beeswax on woodworking projects, I use a heat gun to heat the wood and let the warm wood melt and absorb the wax right from the block.
A quick wipe with a cotton cloth and the finish is very smooth and waterproof.
