They stretch the cluster so presuming the cluster is large enough the brood is never uncovered.
They will not leave the brood exposed even if they starve within sight of stores
You are at the mercy of the queens genetics as to wether she lays too much too early in the year,and at the mercy of the weather as to late cold snaps catching them with extensive brood
This is why you read about the need for "local genetics/bred queens"

Proper backfilling within the brood nest during fall closeout, should be checked as well.
