winter brood?

Found a dead hive yesterday with capped brood. Anyone know if they can have brood in the winter for some reason?

yes they can and will start laying a little brood about now

perhaps it was a hive that died late fall,
a hive crashing from mites or nosema will pull off brood as the cluster shrinks
you will see exactly that, spotty brood patches
