When do I have enough drones?

I am in NC. I have 3 hives. I inherited 40 mediums full of drawn comb as well as 6 deeps. I want to do walk away splits with With my 3 hives and end up with 6. How far into spring before I have enough drones out there for the queen to mate? Will I know it is time when I have queen cells in my hives? I pull those and move them along with some bees to the new hive?

In the spring when the drone larvae in your colonies have purple eyes, I have been told it is time to make your splits. That way you will have a population of emerged and matured drones waiting for the virgins in the splits. If your colonies don't have drones yet, it is too early. Good luck.
