Default Beekeeping Now Legal in DC-Video

The DC Council passed legislation this week to officially recognize beekeeping as legal in the City, but with the usual overreaching of regulations. The law still needs some work, and there are now teeth in the legislation for non-compliance, but it is a step in the right direction. Thanks to the DC Honeybees army that activated to get the law modestly amended before passage. The video of the non-debate on the issue can be seen in the video at this link:

The "getting your neighbors approval" piece is problematic if your on a apartment building rooftop. Do you have to get each and every tenants permission in addition to the building owner?

Wow she just slipped that in to the bill with dry cleaning. And then Wells tried to add his .02.

So Bee's can only go to the top of the bar? So when I am sitting at the bar the girls can be on top of the bar? Wonder how the rest of the patrons will like that.? Do they need a silly umbrella in their drinks?

    Congratulations on becoming legal.

HAHAHAHA!!!!! Anyone who reads this thread, please watch the video to get ESB's joke about the bar. I think she seriously thinks it's talking about a bar (a pub).

The original reading said you must get permission from the building manager or property owner, that makes sense. But in the gentleman's quick reading of the amendment, he said you need to get the permission of neighbor's that are "affected". I can't see how anyone in the building is affected in the least by a hive that's stories above their head that they don't even realize is there.

The revised legislation says that for rooftop bees, one must get permission from folks within 30 ft of the hives.

Good question. 30 feet is 3 stories down. If that's the case, I would have to get permission from all 15 tenants in our building. In addition to that, if there is a common roof deck or terrace, tenants would have to be ok with bees there if they go up for recreational use.
