If honey bees naturally form a smaller cell, why is foundation designed to encourage larger cells? What is the advantage of larger cells?

The old thought was that bigger bees would carry more honey. It is true. But it seems that along with it some other problems have come along. Just like inbreeding every animal so that now they all have problems living without being on drugs all the time.
