Default Size of top entrance in candy board

What size hole will let the humidity out, work as an entrance and not allow mice in? I am going to drill a hole in the front of my candy boards and want it to be the correct size.

1/4" to 3/8" if you are drilling a hole. Mice can't get in and bees can get out one at a time.

I cut a 3/8" deep slot about an inch or so long, works great. You don't want more than that, you don't want a breeze in the hive.

Thanks Peter! My candy board instructions said to drill a 5/8" hole and I thought that sounded to big if I wanted to keep the mice out.

I drill a 1/2" hole. Never had a mouse crawl up the hive and go in.

I have never seen mice get in a top entrance in a hive with bees.

I thought the sugar in the candy board might interest them, so I figured it would be better to be safe than sorry.

I drill 3 1/4" holes spaced approx 1/2" apart . I angle the holes slightly upward to ward the inside to prevent wicking of rainwater. This may or may not be the right thing to do, but just my way of thinking.
