Newly acquired 10 frame colony split at once or not?
Hi beeks,
I am starting to build my apiary and am thinking to buy 2 x 10 frame colonies in May and split them into 4 Top Bar Hives. As some of you know chop and crop of frames and wax will be needed so this can take some time until I close the hives and let them be in peace. I did chop and crop this year so I know what Im doing. This time I made my hives so at least the top frame bar fits under the actual top bar.
Spliting a newly arrived colony! Is this too much stress for the bees or can it be done?
I would like to split them as soon I get them in May so the two hives with last year Queens can be split/swarm once again into two more hives.
Will the Queenless split be too stressed to make a new Queen?
Thank you
