Default Got the hives insulated today

Finally got the hives insulated today. We'll see how they winter. Thanks for the suggestions in my previous thread on this.

They look pretty tight. I can't see you loosing out to cold this year. First time with the rigid foam? I'm about to wrap mine with standard tarpaper - have already put 1 1/4" rigid foil backed insulation under the outer covers. I'm not sure if it was lack of wrapping, or mites, or both that knocked out 2 of my hives late in the winter. Starting out with heavy hives this winter - we'll see.

    Good luck.

Looks good! How cold does it get where you are?
Don't provoke a hive full of angry bees.

    Kelly,
Could you describe the straps that you used, they seem to be doing a good job holding the insulation in place, you really did an excellent job on those hives.

Looks like the rolls of Velcro you get at the craft/fabric stores.

    How are the hives vented?

Thanks for the encouragement. Temperature wise we're expecting 8* this weekend. I've seen -28* for several days some years back. Usually in the low teens. The wife made the straps from a roll if nylon strap and sewed 6" of velcro on the ends for fastening. Simple and holds good. PK

Thanks Kellymt, and again, you did a fine insulating job on those hives.
