I think it is late to try to combine the two hives.Also you will lose a queen.Depending on the size of the two I would try to put them in one box with a divider and two entrances.that way they help heat to other side.
I think Arnold is wrong all together. It's better to combine them to have one strong hive and split in the spring, than to try to get them through the winter the way that was suggested. Pinch a queen, put a sheet of newspaper between the boxes and they will figure out the rest.
