Default Left over bees from a swarm

When collecting a swarm and there is always some bees left behind, what happens to them, Do they return to the original hive?
One of my hives swarmed and went next door. I collected it and walked the swarm home in a box. There were quite a few left so I thought I would let them settle and pick them up in about an hour. When I returned they had all gone.

    Your thoughts

Geoff it is my understanding that bees seperated from the queen return to the parent hive. But I have seen bees hang around for at least several hours. I return about 2 hours after the initial collection and collect bees that have returned to the swarm site.

    Thanks Dave
I made that assumption as the bees should have the same pheromones and be able to return provided their compass lets them. I just did not know so thought I would get other opinions
