Thanks everyone for your input; here's the conclusion to the story:
Since I saw the queen cells (and assumed that there were 3 virgins alive and well) I decided to let nature take it's course, and see if the virgins would mate and return to the hive. I checked the hive 10 days later and didn't see anything of note. I thought I would give them more time - it's late in the season, right? I checked again a week later (this morning) and didn't see any eggs, larva, capped brood, or queen-looking bees.
@waynesgarden, I think you're right - the queen cells I saw might not have been from emerged queens
I'll check around and see if I can find a mated-queen for sale and try to introduce her soon.

I thought I would give them more time I checked again 8 days later (this morning) and
YOu left me hanging JB, what did you mean to say happened after those 8 days?
