There is a very strong smell coming from my hives. It is somewhat a sweet, honey-like smell but has a slight vinegar smell as well. Is this normal?

Sounds like it could be normal, I like the smell![]()

I try to learn from my mistakes, and from yours when you give me a heads up :)
Probably Golden Rod honey. Sounds normal for this time of year. I finally noticed honey smell around my hives yesterday. It has been a pretty long dearth since our last flow at home.
Fermentation? There is always a bit of that going on in a weak hive. Does it smell like apple cider?
Maybe a very slight apple cider smell but it is more sweet like honey. Is there something I should do if it is a weak hive at this late of a date?
Do you know what propolis smells like? Maybe it's that.
Does it resemble pine at all? That what my hive smells like when I open it.
Goldenrod aroma abounds here in Knoxville. I bet you have the same. My sons love to go around the hives, just for the smell.

It does not smell like pine. I have never smelled propolis.
