whatarush Have you looked at Flir infrared cameras I know they used to do demonstrations for free .But their cameras are pricey.
Get a hold of Kirk Anderson through the www.backwardsbeekeepers.com group in Los Angeles.
They are all about feral rescues, they will know somebody who can help you figure out exactly where they are at.

Have you tried using a non contact infrared thermometer on the walls or between the floor joist?
A cheap IR is going to set you back at least 1200.00
I'd contact a good home inspector and pay them to use their camera.

For less than 10% of this number you can buy a competent camera with IR flash from Moultrie and several other competent manufacturers.A cheap IR is going to set you back at least 1200.00
Or you can place a piece of black tape over the two IR diodes. I have done that and it works fine.
