If there a best way to position honey frame for the bees for fall and winter to maximize their survival? Should I spread honey frames or is it better to place honey frames together? Thank you for your advise!

I would not spread them. I would put them together and centered in the middle. That being said, where do the bees have them now? They know best.
I am using two deeps + 1 medium. At our last meeting they said that you should put the medium with honey below the two deep brood boxes. Does that sound like the right place for honey?
Leonard,
I'm not sure the reason for that, but there probably is one. I would keep all the honey together, wherever it is in the hive. That way the cluster can make a collective decision on which way to go. I have a hive that clusters at the top and moves down. The rest do what "normal" bees do.
