Default overwintering 1 10 frame Deep

Hi i am wondering if anyone around my area (Nova Scotia) has ever overwintered a single 10 frame Deep before? if not what steps can i take to insure the splits i made in Mid August will build up for winter storage? Feed 2:1 now ? i have been feeding HBH to them for 3 weeks and still have it on , but it is 1:1. they will have to build off of new foundation.

    Would checkerboarding help stimulate building?

I believe if you do your homework, that you will find other Canadians that are wintering in one deep. Have you contacted the people in Beaverlodge?

i don't think it have the money for a climate controlled building for bees. i buy my queens from a beekeeper who has a building like the one described on the capa bee site (i think that is what you were referring to ?) but it is a great way to go if i could do it with the help of Major quid : )

Ben, do you have any other 10 frame hives?
Have you thought about trying to over-winter that deep on top of a main hive?
This is a first for me. I made a 4 frame Nuc earlier in August.
It's now in a divided 10 frame deep box. The plan is to get them to draw out a second deep and place both on one of our other hives.

I'm posting from my phone so I can't get you some links right now.
Do a search for Michael Palmer's videos on overwintering Nucs.
    Also search for overwintering Nucs.
If u go to my profile and look at some of my recent threads on Nucs that can also give you an idea.

I'm putting a solid board above the main hives inner cover so they will be seperated from each other.
If this first works, I'm going to make several double Nucs in divided 10 frame deeps for the winter months from now on.
