Default How Can I Tell If A Queen Is Mated

Caught a small(less than baseball size) swarm yesterday and have put them in a mini mating nuc to see if they can make a go of it. The problem is we are currently in a dearth and I'll need to reduce the entrance alot so they don't get robbed but by reducing the entrance the queen will not be able to get out.

So how can I tell if she's mated?

    Thanks

I could tell she was a queen right off... She's actually a little bigger than one you might buy although her abdomen is quite thin but much longer than a worker. Real Pretty too.

Sounds mated. Feed them so they fatten her up fast and she will start to lay again!

Ditto, Keth. Sounds like she's mated, and make sure to feed.

Thanks for the responses... I've got the syrup warming up(I had some in the fridge) and I'll throw some pollen substitute as well and keep my fingers crossed.

    Thanks

as soon as she gets to lay and the workers cap the cells you will know for sure because if there are worker cells capped she must have mated.

The queens slim down just before swarming. She will regain that weight in a hurry now that she is in a new hive.

    Good luck with them.
