    Default From 10 Frame Deeps to 8 Frame Medium

    i have 2 hives 2 deeps each next year i want to go lighter and go with 3 mediums for brood boxes is that OK? and practical???

    Yes, it's very ok and practical. if you want to convert the deep comb you have now down to mediums, do this:
    Set the fence on your table saw to 6 1/4". When cutting, place the top bar against the fence and run the frames through the saw so that it trims the extra 2 7/8" off of the bottom edge of the comb. Don't go too fast, just run the comb slowly through the saw. You now have a medium frame with drawn comb. I don't put bottom bars on trimmed frames; the bees do not attach the bottom edge of the comb to the top bar below it anyway. This is what I'd do if I were converting deeps to mediums.

    im switching but im using 1 deep and 2 meds since i had all the deep .u can use whatever u want its all about how much u need for brood and feed to overwinter.

    This spring I converted from 2 deep 10-frames to 1 deep 8-frame plus 2 shallows. That way I only really have to lift shallows. Takes more frames, but my back is happier.

    Gregl, is 3 brood boxes normal for overwintering in IL and WI?
