Default too late for a split this year?

I'm trying to hedge for next year. I usually buy a package and queen in the Spring due to a dead out. Thinking if I take a couple of frames from a couple of strong, healthy hives and add queen I could run this nuc/5frame nuc thru Winter and bee ready for next Spring. I know I'll have to feed until Fall or later to carry them thru. Any thoughts or info on this will be appreciated. Thanks. Pembroke

Pembroke; I made up some nucs like that on August 2nd of last year and wintered 16 out of 18. You are further south so I don't think you will have any problems.
