Default Using Inner Cover With Top Hive Feeder

I am using a top hive feeder and was wondering if I should have my inner cover on top of my feeder or should I be setting my feeder on top of the inner cover? Right now I have it so the inner cover sits on top of the feeder, but I am thinking it may be better to put the feeder on top of the inner cover? Any thoughts on this and does it really matter? Check out my set up at

I am a new beekeeping, so take this with a grain of salt. I put my inner cover beneath the top feeder since there shouldn't be any bees above the feeder to stick the top cover to the box, and so I can remove the top feeder without exposing the whole top of the hive. I'm a little chicken that way!

I use the brushy mountain feeder and i put my inner cover on top of it, Youll have to inspect it once a week because the bees will build a lot of bur comb up through the feeder

Thanks for your input... I think I will go ahead and put the feeder on top of the inner cover the next I am in there. I think this will help with them building burr comb up in the entrance to the feeder. I think this will also make it easier to fill up the feeder without disrupting too much.

Think of it this way. Anything below the inner cover is a part of the hive and the girls will build comb of some sort. The inner cover "magically" tells them it's outside of the hive. A feeder above the inner tells them it's out of the hive but helps against robbing.

An inner cover is normally NOT beneath a hive top feeder.

I'm a rookie, but most of my books and the old-timers in my club told me not to use an inner cover with my hive top feeder.
