Do these trees have long thorns on the trunk and branches?

Definitely NO!
It is an excellent wood for carving and turning and the flowers also make an excellent. mild tea.
Where I was born " central Switzerland I could see a number of Basswoods as large as c10250's from my window - sadly they don't grow here in the subtropics!
