I have a hive that was in the middle of an olive orchard at a friends house but there were hundreds of commercial hives around this new hive mine. I was concerned that they would not be able to protect themselves and I did not know the beeks who were up on the hill. I reduced the entrance and went to check the hive after the olive bloom and there was little progress in honey production.
I think the reducer kept the hive from hitting the bloom with a vengance.
Missed a great opportunity and now my bees have the area to themselves and we are in a dearth.
Lesson learned, let them go and be ready to fail at this.
