    Default Splitting Hives

I am going to make 8 or 9 splits with new queens soon and was wondering if it is best to move the new hives to a new local or can you keep them in the same yard? I can move them about 100yards. Also what time of day is the best for making splits? Morn , noon, evening?

I recently did 10 splits and kept them in the same yard. The only problem for me was shaking in enough nurse bees for each split. The forgers go back to the parent hives so I had to go back twice on one of the splits and shake in more bees.

I did mine in early afternoon only because that was the only time I could do it. Everything worked out fine. All the splits are building nicely.

Michael Bush said you can move bees to a differant spot if you put a stick in front of the hive entrance to stimulate reorientation, I would assume that it would be the same with splits except you probably would lose the foragers. I have no personal experiance with it though.

You need to shake in extra bees to make up for the drift...
