I can not remove a bar of comb in mid-brood by lifting straight up, because of the combined thickness of the comb plus bees on both sides.i have to remove and shift bars to get the slack I need. Is that standard practice?
Generally, you are either going to need 2-3 bars of space to pull bars out or if it is a full hive you need to remove 2-3 bars so you can slide each back and pull it out.
