Default Mice under screened bottom board

Hi. I just discovered a mouse nest under my IPM bottom board and on top of the counting board, they had the counting board pulled away so they can fit in there. I removed the nest and the counting board since it was covered in mouse urine and feces, but now I wonder how to prevent them from returning? They aren't "in" the hive so a mouse guard won't help. The hive is up on cinder blocks and in an area where there are surely many mice. I am sure there will be more problems, just not sure if this is one to prevent if they aren't in the hive. I am hoping as the colony builds up, the mice will be discouraged. Any thought?

You could leave the board out except for specific periods when you need drop counts. I usually don't leave mine in until I use them.

Drop a couple blocks of weather proof mouse poison under the hives.

I don't think they will move back in during the summer. They just found a nice warm place in winter. My suggestion is to put something more solid it. You can also take your board out and put metal window screen on the bottom so they cannot get in down the road.
