    Default Texas Horned Lizard

Thought I would share this with the forum something that you don't see around much anymore. We found this one in our yard this week.

If your not from Oklahoma or Texas you may have never seen one.

When I was a kid we kept them as pets.

There used to be lots of horned toads around here, but they are in serious decline due to loss of habitat and... our insistence on killing every ant on the surface of the Earth. That is their primary food source.
Nobody ruins my day without my permission, and I refuse to grant it...

When I was a little kid, my grandmother had those in her yard here in Tulsa. That would have been in the early 1970s. I have not seen one since.

I have been fortunate to see several over the last few years. The horned toad wasn't as big a surprise as the Road Runner that was hanging out at the mailbox last year.

I work at Tinker AFB and they have a resident population that they monitor for research as a barometer for the health of the eco system on base.

Here is a link to a story about the program.

That is so cool! I lived in San Antonio, TX (Brooks AFB) when I was a little kid, and had a pet hornytoad; haven't seen one in about 40 years now. Thanks for bringing back memories!
