A deep with reduced entrance is fine.
I've wondered similar things. Is there something special about the five frame nuc's size? I'm using eight frame medium boxes. Do I need to split into a five frame medium nuc, or can I just use an eight frame box?

you can split in to what ever u want,it really depends on what your intentions are are u splitting to have more hives, then use your 8 frame,or a deep either one, just remember small entrance till the split can defend the hive.
Yes, I want the hives to myself, so I guess I should use a deep with an entrance reducer.
Although this may not relate to the thread: Does it matter if I put the new splits on a 4 way pallet. Will there be any drifting.

There is always drifting. It is a fact of life. I don't worry about it.
