Default Why aren't my bees as smart as I am?

Almost 60 today in Maine, Yahoo! Found them hitting the coffee grounds on the compost pile. Mixed up some pollen sub with sugar teaser. nothing, added a piece of crushed honeycomb, nothing. Placed a bee on the comb with my finger, flew off and back to the coffee! Can't teach them anything.

The bees know what they need, and obviously it's caffeine.

Your bees might be smarter than you

Caffeic acid phenethyl ester(CAPE) is an active component of propolis from honeybeehives.[13]
Caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid from coffee beans.....

They are likely harvesting propolis components from your coffee grounds.

If I was to bet my house, I'd always take odds bees being smarter than you.

That explains why last summer the bees were attacking the liquid that came out of my large 20 gallon pots with fruit trees. They didn't seem to want to want the fresh water I provided, but were almost frantic to get the water that drained out of those pots ( Filled with compost) I figured they wanted the minerals and electrolights!

Yep! And they'll take water out of the dirtiest, nastiest puddle they can find, especially if it has some mashed up cow manure in it. If you have a stock watering tank watch them and see if they don't go there first, not to the tank but to the mud around the tank.

Mostly New England Breakfast Blend. No De-caf.
fish_stik, what do you call your honey? Original farm blend?

There is a long thread under natural bee keeping about tea for bees. Bees seem to make their own if you do not provide.

The more I learn the less I know.
