How long are you waiting to put the cells in? If you wait 24 hours or longer they are almost guaranteed to start their own cells and then won't accept an introduced cell. We make up our splits and install the cells within a couple hours that same day or not later than the next morning. BTW, never heard that stuff about not using the cell protectors; I've been using them for about 20 years with no problems.
