Went out today (39 and sunny) looked at the hives and the 5 frame nuc is flying like it was 80 deg. Lots of bees in comparison to the double deep hives. Is it better to over winter nucs then dd hives?

Could the five frame nuc be needing to be out looking for food while the DD has plenty so is not needing to fly? Some colonies just fly a lot less in cold weather. You might want to see if you have stores in the nucs.
the nuc is still pretty heavy
My double deeps are all over the place as well.
Could also be that the DD are brooding up where the nucs are not. Could be lots of things.
When is cold the bees are going out of hive looking for food, probabily they are starving, check that nuc and feed the bees with some patties containing honey and powder sugar.
Your smaller nuc may have just warmed up in the sun quicker than the bigger boxes. Sometimes you think a colony must be dead as they haven't done anything in ages and then the next day that are flying like crazy and the hive next door has hardly any bees flying.
Colonies should be overwintered in a hive that best suits their numbers.
May your bees read the same books as you do

I put a jar of honey and pollen on the nuc for feed hope that helps
