What are your local prices for sugar?
57.6 cents a pound here today at the local Save a lot ( beet sugar)
I think Wal-mart is right around the same if not a bit more (cane sugar).

» The FAO Sugar Price Index declined for the fifth consecutive months to 327 points in December, down 4 percent (13 points) from November and 18 percent* (73.5 points) from its July 2011 peak. I believe these numbers don't take into account the USA tariffs on sugar?

Saw a proposal today about a possible new tax on that shoo nasty nasty stuff called sugar. Sugar and everything else sweet, INCLUDING honey has put up with a lot of bad press in the halls of power, since 1840. The idea was that sweets and things you put sweets into like coffee, tea, cakes, cookies, Bar-B-Q sauces, mush, even white bread, caused you to think about sex. One quack (whose brother built an empire out of little flakes of corn) stated in one of the many medical book he authored, that sugar, spices, tight clothing, coffee, etc. caused you to be shy and retiring, bold and forward, develop acne, need glasses or think about sex. You win some, you lose some, but some people are just way to nutty to make a good fruit cake, no matter how much sugar you use.

Sugar has recently advanced on the retail market from 20¢ or 25¢ per pound to about 60¢ per pound. The current price at Aldis is $2.49 for a 5# sack or 49.8¢ per pound + tax.
Sugar on the international commodities market has gone up by as much as 300% since 2008. It is interesting that there is also an import commodity price for American as well as an import commodity price for European sugar.

Also note that the US and the European import commodity prices are going in different directions.

I thought you worked hives in SC and NY is there a reason you buy in PA?

Beet sugar is around sixty cents a pound here at Sams. Amazingly it is higher in a fifty pound bag than a ten. I hate the big bags. It is the most flimsy packaging that will possibly hold sugar. Your fingernail and pressure when picking it up will cause a blowout. I marvel at the price of bulk on the east coast, but no candy manufacturing here and it is a long way to freight it.

I haven't bought any sugar there. I know friends who have. David Hackenberg has bulk sugar in Ag Bags. Both granulated and powdered. These bags hold a ton each. I don't know if he sells it in smaller sized amounts or not.

Mbeck, my bees winter in SC. I travel thru PA to get to SC from NY.

I paid .63 cent lb in 25 lb sacks. Thats about the best I could find recently.

I saw it for .54/lb at Walmart yesterday. That's the cheapest I've seen since getting bees last Spring.

Just so y'all all know that people used to work like mules, in the hay day of illegal alcohol, moon shiners bought their sugar in 100 pound cloth sacks and it was common for a man to carry TWO of these sacks at one time to the still sight.
