Why does your son have the 7" one when you think the 10" one is best? Got to love people's logic...

Over the years.. one just accumulates these things... who knows why.... but today... if I were buying any.. it would be a 10".

I have two 7-inch smokers and one 10-inch, have not used the 7-inchers recently. They seem to perform about the same but it is comforting to know that I am less likely to need to stop and reload the 10-inch version. If you can pick up a super full of honey you probably won't care about the weight difference.

I was told the 7" would do well enough. I paid for all the gear for both of us. The cost difference wasn't much.
I got both especially to make a comparison. Besides, I have seniority. I haven't gotten him a descent bread knife
yet though. (For top bar hives.)

No one has addressed the physical shape and how it balance in your hand. I am thinking about getting the 10" smoker, just did now want some unknown something to pop up. I never thought weight to be a factor. What about my blocks ans 4X4 base to sit the hives on ? Thanks to all

I'm not sure this topic is worth this much discussion. But I'll throw my two cents' worth in. . .

I have both sizes. I use both. I like the 7-inch version if I'm doing a quick check on one or two hives. I like the 10-inch version for longer periods working bees. For a few hives, I don't know that you'll see enough difference to put this much thought into your purchase.

I should add, my smokers have hooks on them to hang on the edges of the boxes while I work. Tipping over isn't much concern while they're hanging. Also, I handle them by the bellows, so "balance" really doesn't enter the equation and weight differences must be slight enough that I've never really considered the difference while using a smoker.

What size hive tool are you going to get? 7 or 10 inch?

I think if you had acquired an old smoker (in my case a standard 7") that your father used many years ago, the decision would already be made for you. It was for me anyway.

nobody has mentioned yet, but I think 20" off the ground might be too high, especially when you start placing supers on. I would probably opt for 12" instead.
