This was fascinating. I meant to watch one or two of them, but got hooked and saw them all. Now I want to get one of those old smoker pipes! Thanks for posting.

I saw these earlier and found them to be enthralling.

Talk about work! - They put a net over every hive and actually sit there for weeks and catch very swarm. I too was interested in that mouth-held smoker too.

    A couple of interesting points

    - the skeps have top entrances.
    - the smoker is tiny, for a large apiary. Shows really light use of smoke.

These are really interesting. Skep beekeeping, as shown here, makes me wonder what a forum of those guys would discuss. I just read the thread "I'm thinking of going to all deeps." There were many ideas exchanged. What would the skep keepers discussions be? "Exactly how far apart are your sticks? Would eight be better than six, or can I get along with only four?" Or, "If you put your cow dung on thicker, would it help during a colder winter?" Or, "Would Japanese Blood Grass make a skep that would be lighter?" I also noticed there isn't much talking in the beeyard as there is when I have helpers/friends.

I too found myself wanting one of those smoker pipes, but I haven't found anyone in the U.S. who sells them. These smokers have been used in Germany for many years and I suppose one would have to find a seller there, you could try the German ebay sight ( ebay.de ) and type in ( Imker Pfeife ), which means ( beekeepers pipe ). I thought the pipe would be really convenient for my spring time inspections. And the videos amazed me and opened my eyes to skep beekeeping, I never realized that you could look down into the skep by pulling the comb apart and manipulate it so easily, and the skep knife allowed you to cut out drone cone and check for eggs and so forth. My idea of skep beekeeping before I saw these videos was that you placed a swarm of bees in one and hoped for the best, I couldn't have been further from the truth on that one, what an eye opener these videos were for me. I think that a lot of our modern day terminology used in beekeeping came from this time period as well.....Bill

wow...watched all eight. I'll have to go back and see what year(s) these were made. I'm thinking early eighties?

Interesting to watch these beekeepers walking around with a veil, smoker and skep knife doing their thing...fast forward to nowaday. numerous hive configurations, tools, suits, gloves, chemicals etc etc.
Thanks for posting that I really enjoed them thx for posting WWW.

    Those guys are really beekeepers.
They brought up a couple things I wonder about though.
    1. They cut out drone comb to free up space for productive comb. I have read that not only for breeding, drones
may serve some other purpose. Comments?
    2. They talk of knowing the moment of swarm issuance by watching the activity at the hive opening. Although I
don't get much time to watch, I would like to know what the telltale signs of bee activity to know of imminent swarming are.
There are probably more questions, but I haven't watched them all yet.

Thanks for the link Adam, I have never ordered anything from another country, it would be interesting to find out how this is done.

Laurence, I have never done a study on drones so cannot answer your questions about that subject, but it appeared that these people did not have a whole lot of use for them LOL.

Adam, thanks for that link; surprised I've not come across that company before. By the way, I see that they sell the 'hobby Kreation' candle moulds -amongst the best in the world.
